Me and my Alterego

Daniel Hentzen
Eischen, Luxembourg

Blue Openings

Acrylic and collage on canvas, 70x50 cm My painting shows me and an old danish fisherman who represents my "alter ego". He lives in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. Every morning he must get up early and work a lot to feed his family. Nevertheless, he has a lot of zest for life, because he loves his job both for the silence over the seas and for the responsability to feed people in many parts of the world. When his boat swings over the waves he gets some peace and enjoys life. The painting describes also the fisherman’s residence: this creative and cultural city with the « happiest people in the world » is characterised by its old and modern buildings, its way of life, its fauna and, of course, its emblem - the « little mermaid ». The fisherman enjoys his job and his residence and is a calm and happy man. The window represents an opening in myself. When I close my eyes, I can go trough this opening. Coming out on the other side, my life as well as my appearance have completely changed. I’m no longer a luxembourgish boy, but this old happy fisherman. The title refers on the one hand to the fisherman’s life, which implies every morning new openings, and on the other hand to the opening in myself. « Blue » represents the wideness of the human spirit and of the seas. It is also a bridge between me and my alter ego.
